Helpful Tips
Some helpful tips that solve most problems:

  • Restart computer (this solves most problems for Windows Users).

  • When traveling and in some offices and motel/hotel rooms, it is necessary to dial 7 or other number for outside line. If this is needed add 7 and a comma before the normal number to be dialed

  • Some areas require 10 digit dialing. If needed then add the area code before your number..

  • Be sure the phone number is local. You are responsible for any phone charges.

  • Surfing is slow and seems to be using the hard drive often? Empty the cache files. In Internet Explorer click on [tools], [Internet Options], then under "Temporary Internet Files" press the [Delete Files] then [OK] and that should help.

  • Getting Disconnected? Check the phone line for noise or other interference on the line. Most disconnections are caused by phone line problems.

  • Error 691 check password and try again? Is your bill paid? Are you over your 150 Hours for the month? Be sure the [Caps Lock] is off.

  • Hang-up modem and re-dial at a slower speed. If you have an external modem, ensure you DO have a high-speed uart.

  • Check your modems initialization string. Download and install the latest drivers for your modem.

  • If browsing the WWW, press the stop button, then the reload button.

  • Check all of your settings in your TCP/IP software. (make sure they match the current IP Information.)

Disconnection problems
Helpful Tips:
  • Line Noise - Noise can be caused by anything between where the computer is plugged in and the phone company office your connected to.  Listen to a phone connected to the computer or the phone cord connected to the computer.  If you hear any kind of noise, static or other disruptions from a clear quiet line then this is most likely the problem.
  • Y connector- The connector that allows you to plug 2 or more phone lines into one phone plug has been known to cause problems.
  • Computer Modem- Can cause problems and in thunderstorm season lightning can cause problems including disconnection's.
  • Devices on the line -  Try removing other devices on the phone line like FAX machine, answering machine, phones, etc. and see if it stops the problem.
  • Phone line Surge suppresser - The surge suppresser that is to protect the phone line may have taken a hit and is now causing noise, connect direct to the wall and test.  If it is bad replace with new one, may be covered by warranty.
  • Call Waiting - The beep you get for call waiting can cause your computer to disconnect when a call comes in.  Disable call waiting while on the computer.  (See phone company for instructions.)
  • Phone Pick-up - Someone picks up and extension phone on the same line can cause a disconnection.
  • Wire Connections - Make sure the wires in the phone jack are tightly connected and also at all connections to the phone company box.
  • Run new wire - Run a dedicated wire from the computer phone jack to the phone company box on the outside of the house.
  • Call Phone Company - Have the phone company check the lines for noise.  If your able to stay on a few minutes or longer at times a 20 second test by the phone company probably will not detect the problem.  Sometimes you have to be persistent.
  • Call Help Desk- Sometimes the help desk can help you add a string that will make the modem more tolerant of some noise on the line.
  • Contact Manufacturer - There may be a problem in the computer or more likely with the modem and the manufacture or a computer service company may need to check it out for you.

Security
The Ten Immutable Laws of Security
  1. If a bad person can persuade you to run his program on your computer, it's not your computer anymore.

  2. If a bad person can alter the operating system on your computer, it's not your computer anymore.

  3. If a bad person has unrestricted physical access to your computer, it's not your computer anymore.

  4. If you allow a bad person to upload programs to your web site, it's not your web site any more.

  5. Weak passwords trump strong security.

  6. A machine is only as secure as the administrator is trustworthy.

  7. Encrypted data is only as secure as the decryption key.

  8. An out of date virus scanner is only marginally better than no virus scanner at all.

  9. Absolute anonymity isn't practical, in real life or on the web.

  10. Technology is not a panacea
